About the event
The Matariki period is a time for remembrance and to honour those who have passed. We thought it fitting to offer a Death Cafe gathering on Friday June 28th, the beginning of Matariki, to provide space to share, listen and support one another. All welcome.
At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and experience and participate in a group directed discussion around death. Far from being morbid, the discussions are lively, free flowing and safe. Death Cafe gatherings are 'group-led', meaning the conversation is directed by the participants of the group on the day. There are no right, or wrong things to say. Coming along to simply listen is fine too!
Death Cafe is a worldwide phenomenon that began in London in 2011, with the objective of 'increasing awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. Since then there have been more that 18,000 Death Cafes in more than 90 countries around the world.
Death Cafe is a not-for-profit organisation, and this event is free to attend. We will be offering tea, coffee and some delicious home-made baking for koha donation.
Please arrive from 10am for morning tea, coffee & cake, and the Death Cafe will run from 10.30am to noon.
Death will always remain a mystery and there are no real answers, explainations or advice that can be held on to - but sharing conversation makes the mystery more manageable. Death after all is the one thing that unites all of humanity.
